Yea it was. It shows Hershel just how fucked up the outside world really is. It also showed that Rick is no pussy, despite always trying the safe route.

I wonder whats gonna happen if there is a split. I don't want Glen removed from the party.

I don't think there's going to be a split. Each of the last two episodes has shown Hershel finally coming around to the reality that the rest of the group sees. I think after that bar scene, Hershel is thinking:

"Holy shit, you *are* a badass, Rick. I realize now the world is pretty fucked up, and my family is probably safer with you than without."

When I saw that scene the first thing that poped in my head was "This is the wild wild west".

Rick should just kill Hershel and tell everyone else that he was killed by walkers
