Game of Thrones

I don't have HBO so I never saw this show last year, even though everyone I knew that saw it raved about it.

Well, now it's out on DVD. Just spent the day watching it, and yeah, it's as good as everyone says it is. A lot of things in the show *really* reminded me of Skyrim. Can't wait for season 2, which is supposed to premiere in April.

Highly recommended if you haven't seen it yet!

rursusferre 03-11-2012 10:17 PM

It's fucking amazing. Same thing happened to me and my wife. Finally caught it and it blew our minds. Ordering HBO just fort the next season.

Onion 03-12-2012 07:16 AM

WTF when did you get married rufus? Was my invite lost in the mail?

Yooxra 03-12-2012 08:26 AM

Yeah this show is amazing to say the least. Can't wait for S2 coming up in 2 weeks.

rursusferre 03-12-2012 09:20 AM

Last year onion. Must have gotten lost.

Rottenzombie 03-12-2012 09:36 AM

The books are amazing too. Goes into way more detail.

Onion 03-12-2012 03:37 PM

After reading the books, I can't imagine watching this show without knowing some of the stuff you get from the narration in the books. Honestly, I found understanding the relationships and NAMES of everyone in the show/books simply not possible with only watching the show.

Highly, highly recommend everyone read the books. And if you're into reading into the theories behind the series here is a really great site http://towerofthehand.com/ .

Gogan 03-12-2012 04:19 PM

Yeah, I had a pretty hard time remembering everyone's name from watching the show. Early on, I could only remember Robert was the king, and Ned Stark -- only because they say their names a lot. But even still, Ned will always be known as Boromir (LotR) by me. I remembered Arya's name, because it's a cool name and I like her character. Of course, the "dwarf/imp" is one of my favorites too, and I don't know his name. Same with the Khaleesi. Awesome character, but I'll be damned if I remember her name.

Fortunately, I didn't find it terribly important to remember everyone's name. I can imagine there's TONS of good backstory you'd get from the books, though.

P.S. The dire wolves are awesome. I hope Arya and her wolf are reunited at some point.

Pathology 03-12-2012 04:30 PM

Just imagine the wolves as 3 times bigger. That is they tip I got from my friend who read the books. Makes them even cooler.

rursusferre 03-12-2012 04:49 PM

Yeah there is definitely a "learning curve" to the show at first. Tons of characters, with difficult names, with complicated plot. But it makes after a few episodes and is just so awesome.

Gronthor 03-13-2012 10:04 AM

I am really wanting to watch this however i dont know the content. If it is like "Spartacus" then i know my wife wont watch it. How is in terms of nudity and stuff like that?

Gogan 03-13-2012 11:13 AM

There's lots of graphic violence, and even more nudity -- both male and female (but more female). Whorehouses are a staple of the 7 kingdoms, apparently. It doesn't have big, long war scenes like Spartacus. Most of the fights and killings are of a 1v1 nature, but sometimes they can be pretty gruesome.

Onion 03-13-2012 11:57 AM

Nothing is as bloody or has as much nudity as Spartacus. If you want your wife to get into the show, maybe go buy the book and you both read it. If you enjoy reading, I doubt you will be able to put it down.

You can also download the books on tape from a torrent, if you don't like reading. (or buy them)

Gogan 03-13-2012 12:38 PM

Oops, I was actually thinking of the movie "300" when you said Spartacus. My bad. I don't think I've seen Spartacus.

Rottenzombie 03-13-2012 12:48 PM

Spartacus takes the style of 300 and pushes it way past the limit. The amount of blood, language, and nudity is so much that its comical.
That being said, the story is fucking awesome, and I anxiously await every Friday for a new episode.

Gronthor 03-13-2012 12:57 PM

I loved Spartacus its a shame Andy had to die of cancer, he was awesome in that role. Guess i will have to watch this series at work!

rursusferre 03-13-2012 01:32 PM

Game of thrones definitely has some graphic stuff, but its really not over the top. It's used appropriately. It's got a lot going on. Love stories, deceit, violence. There are a lot of stories to follow that are going on simultaneously. I am not sure which is my favorite, but my wife enjoys the plot of the Dothraki and Targaryen story line. One of the things that might make it off putting is just how MANY stories are going on at once.

Xenosis 03-13-2012 02:49 PM

Oh wait till shit hits the fan in season 2/3 there will be some big battles. I'm actually curious to see how they do them. So happy they got an HBO sized budget for the series.

Onion 03-14-2012 08:07 AM

Xeno just wants to sell Game of Thrones sex toys

Gogan 03-20-2012 08:07 PM

I didn't realize this story is still very much in progress. The latest book, A Dance with Dragons, was only released in July last year and apparently it's only book 5 of 7. I couldn't stand not knowing what happened with Arya and Nymeria, so I read ahead a bit online. =P

I really hope HBO can keep this show going for 7 seasons. =/

Holy shit, I'll be almost 40 if/when it does make it to season 7.

Gogan 03-20-2012 09:11 PM

BTW, did anyone buy this on DVD/Blu-ray? If so, do the DVDs contain commentary for each episode?

I bought the season on iTunes and it came with commentary for the first episode, but that's it. I normally don't listen to commentary version, but in this case, it added a lot of great info. I'd love to watch the other episodes with it.

Yes, i bought it 2 weeks ago. I watched the whole thing in 2 days. Was amazing. In fact, it made me sign up for HBO and give them $15 bucks a month for season 2.

Yes, the Blueray comes with commentary for each episode. Very helpful for people not so bright like myself.
