Old school dungeon crawler

Legends of grimrock april 11th. Around 10 - 15 bucks, new indie game. I'll be getting this cause eye of the beholder was one of the first games I played as a little gremlin.

GoG.com

If you enjoy old school games once and a while.

LoG looks pretty good -- definitely reminds me of the Might and Magic games, which I loved. Will definitely check it out.

I've never seen gog.com before. Very tempted to go back and play the classics (Baldur's Gate, Might & Magic, Fallout). I still have most of them in the original boxes, but playing them on today's machines isn't always a great experience. Looks like the folks at gog.com have done the necessary work to get them running smoothly on modern systems. Wish they had the Bard's Tale series -- one of my first games that got me into RPGs.

Although, as much as I loved M&M, BG, etc, looking back at those screenshots is pretty rough. BG and FO aren't *too* bad, but the M&M games... eek. Not sure I could actually play through those again despite the very fond memories I have.

Fusa 03-27-2012 12:36 PM

yes asano you nailed it on the head that reminded me right away of the good old fun in Might and magic, only think I wish is they had a hand or a wand showing looks weird to me with just nothing but eyeballs and stuff flying.

I'm in the same boat for some of them. I have balder's gate in a box new that I still haven't gotten to play. Now that they are making balder's gate enhanced edition http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2401667,00.asp I think I might wait alittle longer. Multiplayer in it too.

GoG.com is great for just that, being able to play older games on the newer systems without having to emulate or mame etc which is nice.

As for LoG, i'm preordered 20% off, 11.99. I'm all over it! Bring back some old school memories.

Yeah, I read that. Very cool -- and probably worth waiting for -- but they just started work on it, so who knows how long it'll be till release. =/

GoG has Total Annihilation for 2.99. Amazing.

Rottenzombie 03-27-2012 05:04 PM

Weird. The guy that wrote the gamespy article has my last name. Kind of rare.

Yeah most people don't have "zombie" as their last name.

Gogan 03-27-2012 05:25 PM

Interestingly, there are 264 people with the Zombie surname on MyHeritage.com

I bet people with a first name of "Rotten" are even more rare.

Rottenzombie 03-27-2012 07:04 PM

That's pretty cool, name change inc.

Stag 03-27-2012 07:11 PM

I just recently changed my legal name to R.J Puddingsauce

I just searched Facebook for RJ Puddingsauce and it asked me if I mean Eva Puddingface. But then she didn't exist. I am sad.

I haven't played any of these yet, but they had good reviews when they came out. If you can overlook the old school graphics then you will most likely enjoy some of these games. These are the ones I picked up and plan to play at some point.

One other thing about gog.com they have weekend sales all the time and other type of sales. Never buy games at full price cause they always have half off or more sales all the time.

Stag 03-31-2012 12:52 PM

I am gonna load a bunch of these games on my laptop! To bad they dont have the age of empires games!

rursusferre 03-31-2012 01:28 PM

Planescape torment is one of the best RPGs ever made. It's amazing.

rursusferre 03-31-2012 01:29 PM

Also the original Deus Ex is a must play for anyone who hasn't.

Yooxra 04-04-2012 11:27 AM

Only if you plan to play it. It's $11.99 to pre-order, $14.99 after it comes out tomorrow. So you'd save a few bucks.

Yooxra 04-10-2012 07:52 PM

Already preordered. I'll try to get some time tomorrow to play!

Yooxra 04-11-2012 10:28 AM

Yes!

looks cool.

Gogan 04-11-2012 06:38 PM

I'm installing now. Will give my first impressions in a few hours.

Rottenzombie 04-11-2012 06:40 PM

Watched that stream for awhile, game looks pretty fun. Sorely tempted to get it.

Gogan 04-11-2012 09:41 PM

Ok, initial impressions...

Graphics and sound are great. Environment has high detail, monster animations are smooth and look very good.

Puzzles aren't trivial. Early on they're not too hard, but the difficulty ramps up pretty quick.

Magic is kind of annoying. You have to click some combination of runes to cast each spell. Doing this across two characters each fight gets annoying fast. And if you fail to put enough points in a specific school of magic during character creation, your caster(s) are completely useless for the first level since they won't be able to cast spells.

No hotkeys for fighting means there's a lot of frantic clicking across your 4 characters during a fight. Again, it gets annoying.

No healing spells and few potions can make combat a challenge. I'm only level 4 and I've already died several times (hi 4-pack skeletons). This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it means you need to save often. Which brings me to the next point...

No hotkey for saving your game. Again, annoying.

It's not a dungeon crawler like Diablo/Torchlight/Nethack. It's more like Tomb Raider. Very linear, no regenerating dungeons or regenerating mobs. Once you clear a level, it's permanently cleared. You spend at least as much time figuring out puzzles as you do fighting -- maybe more.

Despite the annoyances, it's a fun game so far. I don't think there will be any replay value though. But for $11-12, it's not bad.

I just started level 3. Dunno how many there are. I suspect it'll keep me busy until D3 comes out.
