OUYA Gaming Console

The upcoming OUYA console sounds like it could be interesting:

It's the second largest funded project on Kickstarter too, at over $5M. Will be interesting to see what kind of games come out of it. Its open nature means it could attract a lot of smaller studios and independent developers for more original and creative games.

Been reading into this. I think it's very interesting, so do many people by the pledges. There needs to be new things out there. I think this comes out next march is what they are looking at right now I'm pretty sure I was reading somewhere.

The console targets non-computer savvy people, so it has a lot of advantages over simply hooking up your PC to a TV:

* Easier hookup to the TV -- no DVI adapters like you'd need for a computer
* Easier controller hookup -- no fussing with drivers to connect a 3rd party controller to your comp. Plus, every game will be designed specifically for the controller, unlike comp games
* Since the console is a black box, it frees the user from game installation troubles or conflicts.
* Free-to-play -- everything on the OUYA app/game store will be free-to-play, at least to some extent. The store interface will make it easy for consumers to find these games. Steam is a rough equivalent to this, minus the FTP aspect.
* Single hardware/OS spec to develop against -- It's always faster and easier to develop for a specific hardware/software set. Developing for the last X versions of Windows and a variety of hardware is slow and expensive.

Most of those items are true for every console, of course. What makes OUYA different is the open nature of the platform. Gaming on iOS has blown up for that reason. I guess we'll see if that applies to the console world too.

not like the DVI is very hard to do tho its just 1 cord, controller works just fine i use my xbox controller for all console games and emulators and never had a problem. its nice that its free to play but a lot of the games u could just pirate anyway. the only thing that could have very good potential for it is the open platform.
