computer problems

My old comp is having trouble...

It's about 5 years old - athlon 2500 1.8ghz, 1gig ram, geforce 4 FX 5600 256mb.

If it doesn't reboot automatically after i start it up it will load things much slower than normal, and have a lot of graphic problems (things like menus or whatever will freeze on the screen). Every time i do anything the screen will go black for a second or two.

I tried getting new video card drivers, this did nothing. I figure it's probably my video card getting old and fucked up, or if not that maybe the processor or motherboard...other than that i'm not really sure.

I realize the description of this is pretty vague, but i can't really describe this any better...I'm probably going to get a new video card and see if that's the problem, any other suggesstions?

What OS are you using?

And yes, that is a very old vid card. You'll see hugely better performance by upgrading even if there isn't anything physically wrong with it, but it does seem like there is.

If you can get your hands on any other vid card to just test it to see if that is the only problem, that would be best. It's possible there are other things wrong, but with what you have said, it definitely points to the vid card.

Agreed on the video card. It's either that or general heat issues. An nVIDIA 6600GT should be pretty cheap and with the rest of your specs you should be able to play WoW okay.

That being said, if a new system is feasible I'd recommend taking care of that now. You're of course getting to the point where the warranties are running out on your parts if they've not already done so, plus you've no doubt noticed the performance hit even when your video card decides to cooperate. I just built myself a new box a month ago to replace a 3 year old system and it's just night and day now, even in WoW.

glad to hear that. raiding on that box would be, uh, impressive.

if you stick to basic desktop apps, that 6200 should be just fine, and XFX tends to be a solid manufacturer.
